Nanomechanical characterisation of a water-repelling terpolymer coating of cellulosic fibres

Abstract Polymer coatings on cellulosic fibres are widely used to enhance the natural fibre properties by improving, for example, hydrophobicity and wet strength. Here, we investigate effects of a terpolymer P(S-co-MABP-co-PyMA) coating cotton linters eucalyptus improve resistance cellulose against wetness. Coated uncoated were characterised using scanning electron microscopy, contact angle measurements, Raman spectroscopy atomic force microscopy with objective correlating macroscopic such as fleece microscopic distribution local nanomechanics. The fluorescence results revealed paper fleeces fibres. Contact measurements proved hydrophobic character coated fleece, which was also confirmed that investigated water uptake in single induced change mechanical properties, measured microscopy. These verify basic functionality but call into question homogeneity coating. Graphic abstract
